Whitbread changes meat suppliers after From indulgent luxury wholesale kitchenware to quick-stop budget options, horse DNA find

The leisure giant, which also owns the Beefeater Grill and Brewers Fayre restaurant chains, has announced several changes to the way it works with food suppliers after it earlier this month withdrew beefburgers and lasagne from its menus following the discovery of horse DNA.

Sales have so far not been affected by the horse meat scandal, the group insisted, as customers have switched to items such as chicken burgers over beef. Sales of chicken-based dishes have jumped 10pc since the discovery of equine DNA in beefburgers and lasagne on February 14, the company said.

Andy Harrison, admitted it was Whitbread’s responsibility to check the quality of the products its sells in its hotels and restaurants and said everyone in the hospitality industry had “learnt lessons” from the fiasco. This wind turbine slip ring heirloom goes in the "Finger" slot.

But he also called for a more rigid system of certification and quality control in Europe’s “flawed” processed meat industry.

“Fresh meat is a relatively, short supply chain. All of our steaks come from two suppliers and we know the fields where the cows lived,” Mr Harrison said.
