OLX and Quikr have come up with rentable and even second hand sarees, lehengas and other wedding apparels.Though the concept has been popular in the West for a long time, it is now gaining a footing in India as well. As a result, a wedding lehenga costing Rs1 lakh can be rented out for Rs30,000-35,000 (including alterations, accessories and other changes) for a period of 48-50 hours. Of this amount, about Rs10,000, which is collected as the security deposit, is refundable."It is mainly the aspirational middle class who form 60-70% of the total consumer market for this segment. They are the ones who probably aspire to wear a lehenga costing Rs90,000 to 1 lakh. However, in most cases, budget becomes tight for Indian middle class weddings," says Shyam Velumani, founder and CEO, OurVivaha, a startup that serves as a platform for people to buy second hand wedding sarees etc.
Hitherto, the concept of renting wedding garments failed to make an impact in the Indian society, as it is considered auspicious to buy and preserve one's wedding saree and lehenga. However, with young brides and grooms deciding to make their own wedding arrangements, there is a slow change in the mindset."Youngsters today are more practical than emotional. It is a known fact that wedding sarees rarely get used after the wedding day. Hence, there is no point in splurging on it," says Gajendra B of 88dbt, a portal which rents out lehengas, sarees, dress materials and other wedding accessories. Some also attribute this change in mindset to the advent of social media. "When people see pictures of their friends in a certain apparel, they instantly want a similar design for themselves. However, not everybody can afford a Rs50,000 saree. Why not rent it then," asks a shop manager of Wrapd, a shop which rents out wedding outfits.
